Bethel-based searchers recover body of boater missing since Friday

The body of a 28-year-old Bethel man missing since Friday, when the boat he was in sank in a Western Alaska river, was recovered by searchers late Monday, troopers said.

In a dispatch, Alaska State Troopers said Benjamin Beaver Jr. was traveling with a juvenile from Napakiak to Atmautluak when their boat struck a sandbar and became submerged in the Johnson River.

The minor was found onshore near the boat and taken back to Napakiak.

Rescuers began searching for Beaver on Friday and were unable to locate him over the weekend. Troopers said his body will be flown to the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

Beaver's next of kin have been notified.
