Alaska senior golf tournament produces new men's leader, hole-in-one

New men's leaders emerged, a hole-in-one was fired and a 78-year-old impressed Saturday at the Alaska Senior Amateur golf championships at Moose Run Golf Course.

Rick Boyles and Gary Murdoch both fired a 75 to take over the top two spots in the tournament.

Boyles, who started the day four strokes back, finished with a two-day total of 154 to forge a one-stroke lead over Murdoch.

They bumped first-day leader Benjie Sumulong into third place at 156. Sumulong, who won the senior men's title at the recent match play state championships, shot an 81 Saturday. In fourth place at 157 is defending champion Bill Arnold.

Tightening his grip on the super seniors lead was 78-year-old Bill Toney, who for the second straight day came close to shooting his age.

Toney shot an 80 Saturday on the hill course and a 79 Friday on the creek course. His 159 total -- which would place him fifth in the senior men's division -- puts him six strokes ahead of Bill Iverson going into Sunday's final round.

The seniors division is for golfers 55 and over; the super seniors division is for golfers 65 and older.

Second-flight senior golfer Stan Petito carded the tournament's first hole-in-one when he aced the 14th hole on the hill course. His two-round total is 188.

In women's competition at the creek course Saturday, defending champion Susie Macleod carded a 79 to strengthen her lead. She's at 162, six strokes ahead of Cathy Shuttleworth.

Other leaders include Joe Roberts in the men's first flight (160), Terry Simon in the men's second flight (180), Susan Gatewood in the women's first flight (172), Richard Teders in the masters division (154) and Adam Baxter in the mid-am division (151).

The women are on the hill course and the men are on the creek course for Sunday's final round.
