Illinois woman rescued from Bird Ridge after she strayed off trail

An Illinois resident was rescued Tuesday afternoon after she strayed off the Bird Ridge Trail and became stranded on a rock ledge, Alaska State Troopers said.

In an online dispatch, troopers said 21-year-old Leah Brackensick of Warsaw, Illinois, became trapped at an elevation of about 800 feet above Turnagain Arm.

A rescue effort was launched at about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday. Troopers, along with an Alaska wildlife trooper and a U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officer, hiked to where Brackensick was stranded and "were able to help her from the rock outcropping and escorted her to the trailhead parking area," troopers wrote.

Brackensick was unhurt, troopers said.

Bird Ridge is a steep, south-facing ridge within Chugach State Park at about Mile 102 of the Seward Highway. It's the site of a popular day hike.
