A man and a woman missing since Friday were found dead in a trailer along the Denali Highway Sunday, according to Alaska State Troopers.
In an online dispatch, troopers said they were notified Friday that a man and a woman were missing from their campsite near Mile 79 of the Denali Highway, not far from the Susitna River bridge.
Troopers who responded "found evidence suggesting an altercation involving gunfire associated with their vehicle and camper trailer," the dispatch said.
The Alaska Bureau of Investigation, a trooper division that handles major investigations, assumed command and launched an extensive search that included aircraft and wilderness search teams.
Two days later, at about 4 p.m. Sunday, troopers heard noises coming from what they described as a "dilapidated trailer" in the area. Evidence of the couple was also found at the scene. Troopers said they surrounded the trailer and attempted to make contact with anyone inside but were unable to.
Members of both Interior and Southcentral special weapons and tactics teams responded to the scene.
Officers entering the trailer found the couple dead, troopers said.
Beth Ipsen, troopers spokesperson, said what led to the deaths remained undetermined Monday afternoon and troopers had not yet determined whether anyone else was involved.
The bodies of the man and woman -- whose identities are being withheld until next of kin are notified -- will be sent to the State Medical Examiner Office for autopsies, and troopers said an investigation remains ongoing.
