Troopers: Nikiski man killed in game of Russian roulette

Alaska State Troopers say a Nikiski man is dead after shooting himself while playing Russian roulette Sunday afternoon.

In an online dispatch, troopers said they were called to a home shortly after 4:30 p.m. Sunday in Sterling, where residents told them that 31-year-old John Rutherford had been sitting on a couch playing Russian roulette when he fatally shot himself.

The incident took place in front of Rutherford's fiancée, troopers said. A 44-year-old man called 911 to report the shooting, which troopers said took place at his home.

Though troopers said in the dispatch that they found "nothing suspicious" at the scene, troopers spokesperson Beth Ipsen said Monday morning the case remains under investigation and additional details are not being released.

Rutherford's body was to be sent to the State Medical Examiner Office for further investigation.
