Anchorage police investigating May 11 shooting as homicide

The Anchorage Police Department says it is investigating a May 11 shooting in Muldoon as a homicide after the 39-year-old victim died Thursday from his injuries.

The victim, who police have identified as David French, was shot in his chest and thigh on the evening of May 11 and taken to a hospital. Police found French in a light blue trailer near the 700 block of Muldoon Road after receiving several 911 calls about a fight and shots fired in the area, Anchorage police Sgt. Shaun Henry said the night of the shooting.

When found, French was responsive but in critical condition, Henry said.

Renee Oistad, police spokeswoman, said that no one had been charged in the case. Police had said the day after the shooting that they had identified a potential suspect, but Oistad said Thursday that "nothing has panned out" and there were no suspects identified.

The death of French brings the number of homicide victims in Anchorage to 16 this year. The count includes the fatal shooting of 27-year-old Marquise Pope on Memorial Day. Last year, there were 15 homicide victims, Oistad said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the May 11 shooting to call Detective Scott Niwa at 786-8891, APD dispatch at 786-8900 or Crime Stoppers at 561-STOP.
