Fairbanks hospital CEO to retire

FAIRBANKS -- Mike Powers, the chief executive officer of Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, plans to retire July 1, the hospital announced Friday.

Powers, hired as chief financial officer in 1986, has served as CEO since 1995. Banner Health said it plans to have an interim executive on the job by June 10.

During his years at the hospital, Powers oversaw the building of the Denali Center nursing home, the J. Michael Carroll Cancer Treatment Center, the Fairbanks Imaging Center, the new emergency department and the Harry and Sally Porter Heart & Vascular Center.

"It has been a privilege to work with Mike Powers for almost 30 years," Jeff Cook, president of the Greater Fairbanks Community Hospital Foundation, said in a prepared statement. He said his dedication to Fairbanks and improving health care will benefit the community for many years to come.

Powers, vice chairman of the University of Alaska Board of Regents, has been active in many community groups as a board member and leader.
