UAA men's hoops adds two big men

UAA men's basketball coach Rusty Osborne expanded his recruiting class to four players with Wednesday's announcement that two big men -- one 6-foot-9, the other 6-6 -- will join the Seawolves from the junior college ranks in the fall.

Osborne announced the additions of 6-9 Tayler Thompson and 6-6 Corey Hammell. He previously announced 6-9 Curtis Ryan and 6-3 guard Spencer Svejcar.

Thompson last season for Cuesta College in California averaged 11.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, shot 58 percent from the field and blocked 1.6 shots per game.

"He is very 'bouncy,' rebounds well, and can shoot to 17 feet,'' Osborne said. "His ability to catch and finish out of ball-screen action will add another dimension to our offense."

Hammell last season led Santa Rosa (California) Junior College in scoring (14.3 ppg) and rebounding (10.2) while shooting 45 percent from the field and 74 percent from the free-throw line.

"Corey's skill set is a perfect fit for our system -- he can pass, screen, and handle the ball on the perimeter, in addition to being able to face up and shoot to the 3-point line,'' Osborne said. "However, his biggest asset is his ability to play hard and rebound."
