WNBA's Griffin putting on free basketball clinics Saturday

Alaska's only active WNBA player will put on three free clinics for boys and girls Saturday in Anchorage.

Kelsey Griffin, a Chugiak High graduate, will conduct the hour-long clinics at The Alaska Club South on O'Malley Drive. No registration is required -- kids only need to show up a few minutes early, dressed to play basketball.

The clinics will mark the first in Alaska hosted by Griffin, who has appeared at other clinics in her home state but has never put on one of her own.

"I am so very excited to bring all of the basketball knowledge I have accrued over my years of playing, and from all the different coaches and players I've crossed paths with, back to Alaska," Griffin wrote recently on The Alaska Club's blog. "I am thrilled to be able to give back to the state that has given so much to me."

Griffin will conduct clinics for three age groups -- elementary students (11 a.m. to noon), middle schoolers (noon to 1 p.m.) and high schoolers (1-2 p.m.).

A 6-foot-2 forward from Eagle River, Griffin just finished her third pro season in Australia and is a month away from beginning her sixth WNBA season with the Connecticut Sun.

Griffin is the second Alaska woman to play in the WNBA. Jessica Moore of Palmer played in the league for nine seasons, a stretch that ended in 2013.
