UAA men sign JC scoring guard

UAA men's basketball coach Rusty Osborne on Thursday announced the signing of scoring guard Spencer Svejcar of Arvada, Colorado, who last season was an All-Region pick for Laramie County Community College in Wyoming.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Svejcar averaged 16 points per game, and chipped in 3.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game last season. He shot 47 percent from the field and 40.5 percent from 3-point range.

"He is an excellent all-around athlete and will bring more size and toughness to our backcourt,'' Osborn said in a news release. "As a high-energy player, he will also help raise our intensity, and we think he has tremendous leadership ability.''

Svejcar, who will have two seasons of eligibility for the Division II Seawolves, was also a high school football star in Colorado and was named Defensive Player of the Year in the state. Coming out of high school, he decided to focus on basketball in college.

Svejcar told WyoSports a recruiting visit to Anchorage helped him decide to pick the Seawolves over Division II Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. He said he also talked to Division I Cal State-Bakersfield.

"I had some interest from some Division I schools and could have played at that level if I was willing to wait," Svejcar said. "But I didn't want to run the risk of missing out on a great Division II offer by waiting around for a Division I school.

"I really hit it off with the coaches, the guys who hosted me and the rest of the team."
