A majority of Anchorage voters approved a $59.3 million school bond package Tuesday, along with all but one of the propositions on the municipal ballot, with 99 percent of precincts reporting.
Proposition 1 is the Anchorage school bond package that would pay for capital projects at eight public schools. Nearly 52 percent of voters approved the bonds with 123 of 124 precincts reporting.
In the past three municipal elections, voters have approved the school bonds and the state has paid off as much as 70 percent of the new debt. This year, however, the Alaska Legislature voted to stop state reimbursement of new school bonds for five years. Up until the election, it remained unclear if the change would affect this year's school bond package on the municipal ballot.
Propositions 2 through 6 asked voters to approve a total of $33.7 million in municipal bonds.
Proposition 3 was the only one without a majority of yes votes by 12:05 a.m. Wednesday. The proposition would pay for a parking lot expansion at the Chester Creek Sports Complex and automated handling system improvements at the Loussac Library, among other projects. About 57 percent of voters said no to the bond with 99 percent of precincts reporting.
With two of three precincts reporting late Tuesday, about 68 percent of voters approved Proposition 7, which would give the Girdwood area power to operate and maintain a local cemetery at its sole expense.
The other propositions would pay for projects from new ambulances to bus stop improvements to pedestrian bridge repair.
