Cim Smyth of Big Lake held off defending champion Jeff King and blew into Kotzebue behind 10 dogs Sunday morning to win the Kobuk 440, the last major sled dog race of the season.
Smyth finished at 6:12 a.m., 46 minutes ahead of King, to claim the winner's prize of $11,135. He took less than three days to complete the race that began about noon Thursday in Kotzebue.
King, who also finished with 10 dogs, earned $7,635 for his runner-up finish.
John Baker of Kotzebue claimed third place, worth $5,135. He finished about two and a half hours after Smyth.
Rookie Kristin Bacon finished fourth to earn $3,135 and 2012 Kobuk champion Ken Anderson took fifth, worth $2,135.
