The Kodiak Police Department reported Saturday that a missing man was found dead in the waters of St. Paul Harbor.
"The deceased's clothing and physical characteristics were similar to missing person Mihay Kalugin's descriptions," Kodiak police said. A family member of Kalugin was on the scene when the body was recovered and identified his remains, they said.
Kodiak police, harbor officers and medical personnel responded to the harbor Friday evening after receiving a report of a man in the water near the A float, police said.
Officers pulled the body from the water using a skiff and brought him ashore. Arrangements were made to send the body to the State Medical Examiner office.
The cause of death is unknown, police said.
While Kalugin's family has been told of the death, police said an autopsy will determine positive identification.
The police department posted on its Facebook page on Feb. 24 that 27-year-old Kalugin was last seen during the early morning hours of Feb. 22 in downtown Kodiak. St. Paul Harbor is near the downtown area.
His direction of travel was unknown, they said.
Kodiak police chief Ronda Wallace did not immediately return a call for comment.
According to a March 9 story by Kodiak radio station KMXT, Kalugin's cousin Alex Reutov said that Kalugin had been in a bloody fight with several other men the night he disappeared. Reutov said Kalugin also may have been seen buying camping gear at Wal-Mart later on the morning of the 22nd.
