2 dead in Glenn Highway crash near Eklutna that tied up traffic for hours

Two people were killed in a three-vehicle, head-on collision late Friday afternoon on the Glenn Highway, according to Anchorage police.

The crash, reported around 4:30 p.m., closed the highway's inbound lanes near the Eklutna exit and one outbound lane as police and medics responded to the scene, said police.

Police said late Friday all inbound and outbound lanes were expected to be reopened by about 10 p.m.

According to a preliminary police investigation, a vehicle traveling northbound on the Glenn went out of control and crossed the median into oncoming traffic. It collided head-on with two other vehicles, police said.

The driver of the vehicle that crossed into oncoming traffic was declared dead at the scene, as was another driver, police said.

Two passengers were taken to the hospital. One of the passengers was taken by helicopter and reported in "very critical condition," according to police.

The drivers were not identified Friday as police notified next of kin.
