This winter has been the least snowy on record in Anchorage up to this point -- nearly 50 inches below average -- and is on pace to be the least snowy ever recorded in Anchorage.
In a climate summary, the National Weather Service wrote Wednesday that only 20.7 inches of snow has fallen in the Anchorage area through the end of March. Since records began in 1952, Alaska's largest city has averaged 70.3 inches of snow by March's end.
Anchorage saw low snowfall throughout the season, and March added almost nothing to the total with just 0.2 inches -- all of which fell on March 3. That is the second-lowest snowfall total ever record for March; in 1983, the city recorded just a trace.
The current record low seasonal snowfall came more than 50 years ago, in 1957-58, when only 30.4 inches fell. That year, 29.4 inches had fallen by the end of March.
