A Fairbanks man suffered serious injuries and spent a night outside over the weekend when he crashed his snowmachine and had to be rescued by the Alaska Air National Guard, Alaska State Troopers said.
In an online dispatch, troopers said they received a report at 9:55 p.m. Saturday that 65-year-old Gary Contento crashed his snowmachine about 1 mile south of the junction of the Tanana and Wood rivers.
Due to river conditions, weather, and darkness, troopers were unable to use their assets to rescue the man.
At 9:45 a.m. the next day, the Alaska Air National Guard's 210th Rescue Squadron from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, was able to locate Contento, land at the crash site and fly him to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
Trooper spokesperson Megan Peters, said in an email Monday that the man's injuries proved not to be life-threatening.
Neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to be involved, Peters said.
Calls to the Air National Guard were not immediately returned.
