Victory by Ross leads strong Alaska showing at Fat Tire Birkie

Will Ross led a pack of six Alaskans who registered top-10 finishes Saturday in the Birkie Fat Bike, a 47-kilometer fat-tire bike race in Hayward, Wisconsin.

Ross, a 25-year-old from Anchorage, was the overall winner in 1 hour, 55 minutes, 30 seconds.

He beat 59-year-old Ned Overend of Durango, Colorado, by 20 seconds.

The race is held on the groomed, snow-covered American Birkebeiner Ski Trail, which is off-limits to bikers every day of the winter except the day of the race.

Ross is the second Alaskan to claim a big victory on the Birkie trail -- Anchorage skier Holly Brooks won the big ski race there two weeks ago.

Eighth-place Saturday went to Jason Lamoureaux of Anchorage (1:58:14) and 10th place went to John Sindell of Anchorage (2:02:34).

In the women's race, Anchorage's Amber Stull and Eagle River's Sheryl Loan placed third and fourth, respectively. Stull clocked 2:21:09 and placed 89th overall, and Loan finished 93rd overall in 2:22:16. Joining them in the top 10 was eighth-place Amber Bethe of Anchorage (2:34:50).

The top woman was Jenna Rinehart of Mankato, Minnesota, who was 43rd overall in 2:12:27.
