Man who killed Alaska grizzly sow, 2 cubs receives jail time

A Haines man was sentenced to 90 days in jail after killing a brown bear sow and its two cubs that had been rummaging in his trash in August 2014, Alaska State Troopers said.

Along with 90 days in prison, 23-year-old Dalton Huston will serve 90 days suspended and have to pay $10,900 in fines. He was also sentenced to probation and has lost his hunting privileges for the next two years, troopers said.

According to troopers, Huston killed the three bears after finding them "rummaging through trash that was strewn about the entire property" at Mile 7.5 of the Haines Highway on Aug. 10, 2014.

Troopers said Huston chased the bears from his home, followed and then killed them. Troopers were notified of the killings a week later by an anonymous tip.

Huston was charged with killing each of the bears and pleaded guilty to the charges earlier this month. The rifle Huston used to kill the bears was forfeited.
