Strong winds blow through Southcentral, Southeast Alaska

High winds pummeled Southcentral and Southeast Alaska on Thursday evening and Friday morning.

The highest gusts, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Julia Ruthford:

-- Eldred Rock northwest of Juneau was hit by a gust of 114 mph early Friday morning. As of 7 a.m. Friday morning, gusts continued to top 100 mph.

-- In Thompson Pass north of Valdez, 96 mph winds were recorded at 10:21 p.m. Thursday.

-- At Palmer Municipal Airport, 75 mph gusts were recorded at 9 p.m. Thursday.

-- At Stevens Anchorage International Airport, gusts of 48 mph were recorded at 7 p.m.

-- At Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, gusts of 43 mph were recorded at 10 p.m.

Wind warnings remain in effect in the Matanuska Valley through Friday. Gusts of 60 to 80 mph are forecast. The Matanuska Electric Association noted multiple outages overnight Thursday on its Facebook page.

In Valdez and Thompson Pass, the wind warning is in effect until 9 p.m. Northeast winds of 25 to 45 mph with gusts of 60 to 80 mph are forecast.

In Anchorage, strong winds are forecast, with gusts of 40 to 50 mph expected to continue Friday.

In Juneau, a wind warning remains in effect through Friday afternoon. Winds gusting to 60 mph near Skagway and to 70 mph in downtown Juneau and Douglas are forecast.

In terms of possible impacts, "travel may be difficult. Trees may be blown over. Loose debris can be moved and damage property. Localized power outages are possible," NWS writes.
