Dimond, Chugiak among 8 winners at Dimond Lady Lynx Shootout

Cook Inlet Conference girls basketball got wins from host Dimond and Chugiak in Wednesday's opening round of the Dimond Lady Lynx Shootout, but three other CIC teams fell.

Meanwhile, two Fairbanks teams -- Lathrop and West Valley -- each cruised. Valley teams went 2-1, Southeast teams went 2-1, Peninsula teams went 0-2 and Point Hope, the only non-Class 4A team in the field, lost its opener.

The 16-team tournament that draws teams from throughout the state, and affords them each four games in four days, breaks down into two brackets beginning Thursday. Wednesday's winners head into the Gold bracket and Wednesday's losers move into the Maroon bracket.

Dimond used 33 points from Rohyn Huss to deliver an 83-37 win over Point Hope, which got six points from Jordyn Lane. Chugiak's Anna Ingraham scored 12 points to help the Mustangs beat Palmer, 47-37.Kim Madruga led the Moose with seven points.

CIC teams that lost openers were Bartlett, which Wasilla dispatched 58-16; South, which Colony handled 52-36; and West, which Lathrop rolled 62-27.

Leya Depriest paced Wasilla with 14 points and Azlynn Brandenburg added 13. Tiffany Michels led Bartlett with seven points.

Faith Farris' 15 points and Chase Stephens' 10 spurred Colony. Zulia Cole led South with 14 points.

Lathrop's Jahna Hajdukovich led the Malemutes with 14 points. West's Marshala Eady scored six points.

Also racking wins were Ketchikan, West Valley and Thunder Mountain.

Ketchikan used 20 points from Alexis Biggerstaff in a 59-37 win over Soldotna, 59-37, which got 11 from Skyler Shaw.

West Valley's Ruthy Hebard pumped in 24 points to spearhead a 59-26 win over Juneau. And Ashley Young's 24 points keyed Thunder Mountain's 44-24 victory over Kenai.

Boys basketball

Service 61, Eagle River 55

Four Service players combined to score all but two of the team's points and generate a 61-55 Cook Inlet Conference boys basketball victory at Eagle River.

Eben Upton delivered a game-high 22 points for the Cougars, Brad Wacker added 13, and Nathan Fromm and Pindo Drammeh each furnished 12.

Justin Patin led the Wolves with 19 points, Eric Andersen bagged 16 and R.J. Dierscherl contributed 14.
