Anchorage grand jury indicts man on attempted murder count for shot in face

An Anchorage grand jury has indicted a man suspected of shooting an acquaintance in the face at a city park.

State prosecutors say 31-year-old Puipuia Alaelua was indicted Thursday on counts of attempted murder, assault, evidence tampering and weapons misconduct.

Alaelua was arrested the day after the Jan. 13 shooting.

Police say a 30-year-old man set up a drug transaction with Alaelua and met him at a gas station.

Police say Alaelua drove the man to Nunaka Valley Park, told him to leave the vehicle and shot him.

The man was able to call 911. Police recovered a bullet wedged in his mouth.

A conviction for attempted murder carries a sentence of five to 99 years.
