1 dead in cabin fire near Talkeetna

An as-yet unidentified person was killed in a cabin fire in the Talkeetna area Saturday, Alaska State Troopers reported.

An online dispatch posted Wednesday said troopers received a report of a fire that had occurred at a cabin in the small Southcentral Alaska community shortly after 11:50 p.m. Saturday.

"Troopers responded and found the cabin had been burnt to the ground," the dispatch said.

Officials returned to the scene of the fire the next day during daylight to examine the site. "Human remains were found in the fire debris," troopers reported.

The remains had been sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office but had not been positively identified as of Wednesday, troopers said. No foul play is currently suspected in the blaze, they wrote.

Troopers spokesperson Megan Peters declined to offer greater detail about where the fire occurred in the Talkeetna area or specifics about the cabin, pending identification of the victim.

"I don't have additional information to provide until we have a positive ID," Peters said.
