The Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District lifted its suspension on military recruiting Tuesday, one week after a temporary ban went into place.
Deena Paramo, Mat-Su schools superintendent, said in a statement that the decision to restore military recruiting on school grounds followed an in-person meeting she held early Tuesday with recruiters from the Alaska Air National Guard, the Alaska Army National Guard, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army.
In the statement, Paramo said she was "impressed by the level of engagement and response from every branch of our military in setting the record straight and moving forward to best serve our students and families."
She said that during the meeting the military recruiters outlined their training and the process for how complaints are reported. Each branch of the military provided a list of people the district can call if problems arise, the statement said.
Paramo halted military recruiting Oct. 21, on the heels of a similar announcement from the Anchorage School District.
Both announcements came in the wake of media reports on leaked investigative files that describe years of alleged sexual assault, harassment and other misconduct in the Alaska guard, including some instances involving recruiters and students from Dimond High in Anchorage.
On Monday, ASD Superintendent Ed Graff described the meetings military recruiters must attend and the information they must provide before permitted back on school grounds. Graff said recruiters from the guard will have additional steps to complete before returning to ASD.
