Wasilla police are investigating the death of a woman found in the parking lot of the Wasilla Sears on Friday afternoon.
The woman was identified Friday evening as 50-year-old Wasilla resident Karen Davis.
Police responded to a 2:30 p.m. report of a female adult down with a gunshot wound outside the store at the Parks Highway and Seward Meridian Parkway, Wasilla police spokesman Officer Rick Manrique said. The person who called 911 apparently stayed in the area until police arrived.
Officers found a handgun outside with her and keys to a nearby vehicle, he said. There were numerous witnesses in the parking lot.
Police are still investigating the woman's death and haven't ruled anything out, he said. The State Medical Examiner Office will conduct an autopsy.
The woman's body was still in the parking lot, covered by a dark tarp, at about 3:15 p.m. Yellow police tape cordoned off a small area around her, including a Ford pickup, as shoppers came in and out of the store.
