A fire Sunday in a Southwest Alaska village destroyed a home and apparently left one person dead, authorities said.
A woman was inside the home in Aniak when she smelled smoke coming from a bedroom that she believed was occupied by a man and relative, according to Alaska State Troopers, who received a report of the fire at 6:58 a.m Sunday.
“She received injuries and smoke inhalation while she attempted to extinguish the fire,” the agency reported Monday.
“After the fire burned out, the remains of an adult were discovered,” troopers reported.
The fire marshal’s office in Fairbanks planned to send an investigator to determine the cause of the fire.
