Missing Grayling teen found dead in Yukon River

A teenage boy from Grayling reported missing Thursday was found dead in an apparent boating accident, according to Alaska State Troopers.

No signs of foul play were found in the death of 16-year-old Gabriel Nicholi III, troopers said in a Friday dispatch. Nicholi, who was last seen alive by another Grayling resident between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. Wednesday, was reported missing by the local tribal administrator at about 1:35 p.m. Thursday.

A state aircraft carrying an Aniak-based trooper and a village public safety officer arrived to help search areas near the Yukon River village of about 180 people, roughly 18 miles north of Anvik, as ground searchers began to check the river.

"At about (2:45 p.m.), volunteer searchers while conducting dragging operations on the Yukon River in front of the village located the 16-year-old's body in front of a boat in about 10 feet of water," troopers wrote. "The state medical examiner's office was notified and the body will be transported to Anchorage for an autopsy."

Nicholi's next of kin have been notified, troopers said.
