Boy dies of injuries suffered in weekend crash near Palmer

PALMER -- A 5-year-old boy injured in a single-vehicle crash Saturday near Palmer has died, Alaska State Troopers said Monday morning.

The boy was in a Ford pickup with another child and three adults when the crash occurred around 6:45 p.m. on the Old Glenn Highway at Smith Road in Butte. All the people in the truck had a family relation, a troopers spokesman said.

The driver lost control of the pickup and it rolled, troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain said Monday. The boy was pinned beneath the vehicle.

Troopers and emergency responders extricated him and began lifesaving measures. The boy was transported to a hospital with injuries described as life-threatening.

The others in the vehicle were also taken to a hospital. Their injuries were not life-threatening, troopers said.

Evidence at the scene and contact with the driver indicated impairment due to alcohol, DeSpain said. It didn’t appear anyone in the truck wore a seat belt, he said.

An investigation continues.
