Soldotna man missing on hike near Chena Hot Springs found dead

A Soldotna man was found dead Monday by state park rangers a day after family reported he was overdue from a hike in Interior Alaska.

Troopers believe 26-year-old Jarred Allen died from hypothermia. Temperatures were in the single digits when rangers discovered his body, according to Ken Marsh, a spokesman for the department.

Allen had hiked into the Chena River State Recreation Area from near Mile 49 of Chena Hot Springs Road. He planned to hike to the Upper Angel Creek Cabin, Marsh said.

Rangers drove ATVs on the trails and found Allen about 6 miles from the road and a mile from the cabin.

A troopers helicopter was used to retrieve Allen’s body.

Allen did not appear to have any other injuries and Marsh said foul play is not suspected. The State Medical Examiner’s Office requested an autopsy.
