Man killed, child hurt in collision on Parks Highway near Fairbanks

A 46-year-old Fairbanks man was killed and a child passenger hurt when an SUV and a pickup collided on the Parks Highway near Fairbanks on Monday afternoon, Alaska State Troopers say.

Shawn Masterson was northbound when he lost control of a 2002 Ford Explorer and crossed into oncoming traffic, troopers said in an online dispatch posted Tuesday. A southbound Dodge Ram 3500 driven by 52-year-old Thomas Monicken of Fairbanks struck the Explorer.

Medics pronounced Masterson dead at the scene, troopers say. A child in the Explorer was taken to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

Monicken suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.

An investigation continues.
