Man from Alaska Peninsula tried to smuggle 3 pounds of meth on a state ferry, prosecutors say

Prosecutors say a 20-year-old from the tiny Alaska Peninsula village of Egegik has been federally charged for carrying 3 pounds of methamphetamine while traveling on the state's ferry service.

Jason Corey Vincent Alto faces a charge of possession with intent to distribute that includes a mandatory minimum decadelong prison sentence.

Alto was charged with possessing the drugs while on board the Alaska Marine Highway System's mainline ferry Kennicott, prosecutors say.

"Alto was traveling from Washington to Whittier, Alaska, when he was contacted in Ketchikan and a search of his luggage revealed methamphetamine," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Alaska.

A two-page federal indictment says Alto was caught with the drugs on May 30.

State court records show Alto has also been charged with felony drug possession in Ketchikan.
