Driver held on manslaughter charges after fatal DeBarr Road crash

A man died and four people were injured in a crash early Wednesday morning near Alaska Regional Hospital.

The driver, who tried to flee on foot, is facing manslaughter and DUI charges, Anchorage police said.

Police spokeswoman Anita Shell said in a statement that word of the wreck, involving a Dodge minivan headed west on DeBarr Road, first reached dispatchers at about 1 a.m. The van "had been traveling at a high rate of speed," according to the statement, before leaving the road on a curve near Alaska Regional Drive.

"The vehicle had flipped several times before coming to rest in the hospital's parking lot," Shell wrote. "Several of the occupants were ejected from the van, which had no back seats.

"One man was declared dead at the scene, a woman was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries, and two other male passengers sustained minor injuries."

The deceased man wasn't identified pending notification of his next of kin, Shell said.

The driver, 49-year-old Luther Rollins, was taken into custody near Airport Heights Elementary School with the help of a K-9 unit when he ran from the scene, Shell said. He was treated at a hospital for injuries, charged with manslaughter and DUI as well as two counts of second-degree assault and one count of third-degree assault, then held at the Anchorage Jail on $15,000 bail.

Court records show that since 1993, Rollins has had misdemeanor convictions for driving without insurance and driving without a valid license, in addition to citations for speeding and careless driving.
