One person was found dead after a house fire in the North Slope Borough early Monday, Alaska State Troopers said.
The Alaska State Fire Marshal’s Office was notified Monday of a residential fire that happened around 2:30 a.m. in Wainwright, a village on the Chukchi Sea coast. One of the occupants of the home was missing and believed to have been inside during the blaze, Alaska State Troopers said in a statement.
Two deputy fire marshals traveled to Wainwright to investigate the fire’s origin and found human remains, troopers said.
The Alaska State Medical Examiner’s Office will determine if the remains match the person presumed to have been inside the home during the fire, troopers said. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, but troopers said foul play is not suspected.
