13-year-old Fairbanks girl drowns at Interior lake

A 13-year-old Fairbanks girl drowned while swimming at Chena Lake Saturday, the Alaska State Troopers said in an online dispatch Sunday.

At 5 p.m. on Saturday, Fairbanks troopers were called to Chena Lake Recreation Area, southeast of North Pole, for a report of a missing swimmer.

Chenina Oseia, 13, of Fairbanks was swimming with "a juvenile relative" when she "ventured into deep water and disappeared," the dispatch said. The swimming area does not have an on-duty lifeguard.

First responders from Salcha Fire and Rescue and North Pole Fire Department began a search for the girl. Her body was found in the water about 50 yards from the shoreline, according to the AST.

Emergency responders performed CPR and took Oseia to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
