2 teens dead after van rolls over in Petersburg

Two people were killed and two others were injured when a van rolled over in Petersburg on Monday morning.

John Hamilton, captain of the Petersburg Police Department, said that the van rolled over on the 400 block of South Nordic Drive in the Southeast Alaska community around 7:25 a.m.

He identified the two people who died as Molly Parks, 18, and Marie Elaine Giesbrecht, 19. Their families have been notified, Hamilton said.

The cause and details of the accident are still under investigation.

Hamilton did not release the identities of the two who were injured. They were taken to a hospital. The driver was not killed, he said.

All four people were or are employed by the Petersburg Borough, Hamilton said, and the van is owned by the borough.

Fourth of July festivities, including a parade, were canceled, said dispatcher Jenna Durst at the Police Department. She said fireworks are still supposed to happen after a candlelight vigil downtown near Wells Fargo Bank at 10 p.m.
