Tetlin River fire burning 'hot and deep' near village

No evacuations have been ordered for a 1,000-acre wildfire burning "hot and deep" in the forest around the Interior village of Tetlin Sunday.

The Tetlin River wildfire, which was first reported Friday afternoon, continues to burn close to the village, even touching an airstrip on the outskirts of town, said Division of Forestry spokesman Tim Mowry.

The Tetlin River fire is burning about 20 miles south of Tok, near the 125-person community of Tetlin. Fed by hot, dry winds, it grew over the weekend from 30 acres Friday to 1,000 on Sunday afternoon.

But it was not immediately threatening any structures as of Sunday afternoon, and a team of more than 130 firefighters from around the state was focusing efforts on keeping it away from the village's airstrip, crucial to getting supplies in and out and landing firefighting helicopters, Mowry said.

"It's pretty resistant to suppression," he said.

By the end of Sunday, four additional crews from around the state were expected to join the effort, bringing the total personnel working the fire to more than 200, according to the Division of Forestry.

Conditions in the Tok area remained dry Sunday, even as other parts of the Interior got rain.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
